[Day 23]
Today was my last day at Eastwind. I wanted to prepare something for everyone. So I bought energy drink from yesterday. Last day of going to the post office was very sad. By the way, today I made the feedback sheet for the colleagues. I didn't know that I had to make feedback sheets. but I had ideas from previous supervisor(Chiho san) this morning and she said get some good feedbacks from everyone. so I asked to Julia(who has already finished co-op practicum) by text message, and she told me that she made some survey questionnaire feedback from for her colleagues. I started to make mine referencing to my learning contract. I never made this kind of forms, so I looked up through Internet, and found out for the 'examples of feedback forms' and I could find the example of the feedback form. I made 5 questions, and comments with each skill together. I wanted to have a check from Heri if there are some problems that I need to correct. After the correction, I printed out 5 pages and hand out to 5 different colleagues that I worked with/for. Some colleagues couldn't answer all the questions, as they were not participated with some of my works.

[Day 22]
Tasks.
- Recieved the feedback, talking about them.
- fix previous poster referencing feedbacks.
- Try to fix another poster [Deep Fryer] myself.
Today is the last day of full-time working at Eastwind. So I came earlier than another days, and tried as hard as I could for preparing.
Today I received the checked documents of translations that I've completed few weeks agon on [Scale remover] and [Water deep fryer]. It took a while because my colleague was pretty busy and she had to meet this native speaker to check it for us. They couldn't finish to mark these works. so my colleague just gave me the poster of [Scale remover] and just told me a short feedback on [Water fryer]. After I fixed the [Scale remover] poster with referencing the feedback, I tried to fix the problems on [Fryer machine] poster by myself. Because I thought the problems on the [Fryer machine] will be the same.
First, I tried to shorten my translations, and if the context make sense or not. I have deleted a lot of parts, but make sure to transmit what the poster really wants to say. I already sent the email to my colleague, and don't know if I can get feedback for this poster, but I guess at least now I know how to translate for posters.
Today I did farewell with my previous supervisor (Chiho san) because she sometimes comes to the office at the end. I thought I may not meet her on Tuesday so I was wondering how can I say goodbye well in Japanese, but she was too fast for me. She was almost leaving the office. I hought it is too late for farewell, but one of my colleagues (Akemi san) called her, and told her about I'm finishing on next Tuesday. Luckily I could say goodbye to Chiho san, she apologized to me about that she couldn't fully supervised on this practicum until the end. but it was okay for me because we could both say goodbye to each other, and they told me to comeback sometime. After Chihosa left, I said 'thank you' to Akemi san for calling Chiho san. because if she didn't call her for me, I wouldn't be able to meet, and say goodbye to her.

[Day 20]
Tasks.
- Go to the internet shopping websites and search &print out for;
[Privacy & security , Any informations on delivery & payments & Returns & Exchange of products etc.]
web site link : The Health Store, NewZealand Health Shop, Aotea Newzealand
*Sample website (East wind is working on internet shopping for Japanese people with cooperative company 'Kiwikitz'.)
Today one of my colleagues had holiday so my other colleagues gave me the permission to sit on the empty seat. I felt very different that I became more like a real cooperator. I started today's work from my NEW place. The computer was way faster. Today I worked as one of a Eastwind business women. I didn't work for the translation, but more like a professional job and helping and cooperating with other colleagues. While I was helping, talking to my colleagues, work with them, everything gave me so much happiness in that moment and good memory too. It is my last day on next Tuesday. I think it is very lucky to have such a good time with my colleagues here.
*Received checked translation file. [No.12(02/07~03/07) : Letter of Engagement]

[Day 19]
Today, the first thing I did at work place was apologizing. I wanted to apologize to my colleague for Friday. And she smiled and forgave me.
My pre-supervisor wasn’t at our office today of course, and I couldn’t get any replies on writing messages or letters of changing supervisor. Maybe she was busy. However, she gave her responsibility to Hyeri as she was pre-intern student few months ago, and she is a Korean and she can teach me better in work placement. I had various translation works with various people in my office not only my work-based supervisor, so I don’t think she cared that much about it. I only have 1 week to go, so I don’t have to worry much about on it I guess.
Tasks.
- Go to the Kiwikitz web page, and find out the plants that has been used to the products.
- Make the chart of the name of plants in alphabetical order
- Translate into Japanese.
- 2nd translation on mobile phone contract
The first task was go to the kiwikitz web page, and find out the plants that has been used to make the products in this brand. First I collected all the plants into excel, and made them into alphabetical order. I asked from my colleague to find out those plant names in Japanese. I was thinking which site will be better to find the plant names. So I chose ‘Wikipedia’ I chose Wikipedia Japanese version, and I typed the English names of plants, and I almost could get the plant names. My colleague said if I couldn’t find the name of it, just leave it as blank. I tried on Wikipedia first, and I couldn’t find, I tried on dictionary again. I left as blank if I couldn’t find on both sites. [This webpage is the site that our company is working on and what I've helped today]
Second translation work was in Japanese to English, it was the mobile phone contract that is organized from East wind.

03/07/09
I couldn't finish 4 pages by 5.00pm. The pieces were just too hard for me. I was almost finished the translations, but I knew that I couldn't finish perfectly so I sent the email to my colleague and appologize about the ancompletion. and I heard from Heri that she couldn't see my email again, maybe the computer has the programme. so I couldn't report my information. How unlucky day!
[Day18]
Task.
- To hand in my previous translation and ask for the feedback/check/get original file from online
- Send previous translation work online
- Get feedback from Heri (Korean Translation)
- New translation work
Today I handed my previous translation work and asked them or the feedback and also for the original file to upload on my portfolio. (but I couldn’t get it today I hope I can get it sometime.) and also I asked from my colleague to send the file of translation work which I just printed out and handed in yesterday. I sent the mail to Heri, and asked her for the feedback/checked files of my previous (Korean/Japanese) translation works. I received some files and an email that was saying other file has no problem with translation. So I’ve uploaded them on my portfolio as well.
After finished them, I had new translation work for today. It was for non-English speaker Japanese. Which means it is from English to Japanese. I thought it will be take pretty long time. And it was 4 pages. At the end of working time, I only could finish 1 page. So I left my note to my colleague and said I will come tomorrow and do it.

[Day 17]
It's already July. I can't believe I'm almost finished. I checked so many times on my schedules, and I always have different working times. I guess I had mistake on my schedule timetable. Which means, I will finish earlier than I expected. As on my schedule, I supposed to finish on the 20th July, but actually, it is not. I'm finishing on the 14th of July. I had even 1 week earlier. I better work harder. These days I get more translation works than the beginning. But they are mostly very hard topics. While I was translating, I just think that if I knew more about those topics, it will be way easier than now.
However, I had some translation work again this morning, and they were pretty urgent works, so I was thinking of ‘time management’ strategy on my learning contract. But I couldn’t finish all of it because one of the pieces was very hard for me. So I had to politely apologize to my colleague about it, and I handed the other finished translation works.
If I had more time and I could relax more, maybe I could’ve done translation, but I just gave up. I was ashamed of myself. But I think it can be the part of my work and life experience.
Monday, June 29, 2009
[Day 16]
I had second meeting with Naoko san (who is looking after for my work : for the last two translations I've had from last week. I couldn't still figure out from a piece of it, so I asked Naoko san about it. and she suggested me to ask someone in our office for help. So I asked Heri about this part. Heri taught me how to translate from Japanese to English well. She tried to show me if i try to translate to Korean from Japanese first and then to English, finally check with Japanese. So I tried with that method. It was way better than Japanese-English English and Japanese is my second laguage.
I also had to change some designs of this translations, but my computer wasn't good enough to design for our satisfaction, so I brought my own computer and I designed the new translation paper.
It will be checked with English speaker next week, and I asked Naoko san for the checked paper as well.
*Heri's TIP: She used to learn translation at AUT, and she learnt some tips for the translation. and she told me about it today. When I do translation work, it will be better to know some backgrounds; some research. So for example, I did the translation on fryer machine, so if I do some research on [Fryer] in English and find out the way they advertise, and the usage of English. It was very helpful tip.
Saturday, June 27, 2009
[Day 16]
I could finish the translation work for the [Scale remover machine] for today, and I sent my work to my colleague. But she said she wants to make this as one paged handout. But actually I couldn’t fit into one paged with old version word office. So I came home and work little bit more for this translation. I made a chart, made an image and finally I could finish as one paged handout. But I just feel something is missing. I sent the one paged handout, and ready to checked from my colleague on Monday.
I had another translation on [Water clean fryer] and it took me so long to translate. Maybe I even need someone to check for this. Japanese words were too hard on this hand out either.
While I was translating, Heri(pre-intern student) came up to me and gave me a work. She wanted me to ring to Korean markets which were written on the book, (related to immigration) and ask them information, and write a report in Japanese. I rang to about 5 companies, and I had to write a report about the information I’ve got. It was the first time I was writing a report at company, but first I wrote a little sentence about today’s occasion, and I started to create the table about all the information I’ve got. I printed out and checked from Heri first, fix the grammar and emailed it.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
[Day 15]
Tasks.
- Research: Freckle Cream/products made in NewZealand
- Translation: [Excel] [Japanese-Korean] [Used Time Management]
From today, I work for full time. I went to the post office as usual, and after that I got my first task, which was to research for the [freckle cream] made in New Zealand. I had to research for the creams, and print out, and to email it etc. While I was researching for this cream, I found out that in New Zealand there aren’t many creams for freckles, but instead they mostly import. My colleague wanted the proper branded cream, so it was pretty hard to find. I had to explain this situation in Japanese. (I tried hard as possible to be politer while I speak in Japanese to my colleague.)
Second task was translation. For this task, my colleague wanted me to finish fast as possible. (My colleague gave me 1 hour, but I had some problem with my excel so it took me more time.) I tried to do my work as soon as possible, but to not have mistakes. I couldn’t finish in 1 hour ofcourse, but at least I tried my best for my task to success, and I could finish it.
Friday, June 19, 2009
[Day 14]
Tasks.
- Research:Manuka honey with less known company/Manuka honey candy
- Find out how to import [Deep Frier] from Japan
The main tasks I did today were the researching and the calling to the ‘NZ customer service’ to find out how to import the machine from Japan. First, the researching were about Manuka honey in New Zealand with less known company, and also Manuka honey candies.
For the research, I did ‘Google search’ for this one to find out the companies for Manuka honeys. And to report this task, I’ve researched few companies, and copy the photos, company names, and copy the web links together.
The second task was pretty hard for me as I have no knowledge about import/export and I asked to find out how to import the machine from Japan. And I had to call to ‘NZ customer service’ centre. I tried to talk to them, but they were too rude and it was hard to ask any questions without any knowledge. So I asked my colleague what to do, and he helped me to go to the online webpage for the ‘NZ customer service’. And we could find out the answer together. I was surprised for how big is the range of this company work for.

[Day 13]
Today, I asked to Hayley(who have completed her co-op practicum 2 years ago, and she is now working at Eastwind) what to do for today, and what is going on Eastwind etc. I did some of translation works for her before, and she said I need to improve my grammar and expressions more. She had too much works to do besides checking my translations, I think maybe it is why it took so long for my feedback. I also asked her that if there are meetings with customers that I can able to join, and she said just join anytime I want.
After that conversation, I received similar translation work with the one I had from the beginning. It was pretty long so I had to bring it back home and complete it. This company joined into Korean website from this month. So she was very excited, and I also want to help while my internship, because there are only 2 Korean employers, and it is a lack of people to start a new business. Today, I also listed some Kanji I found hard on my translations work. I will have a small test and check from my Japanese friend every end of the week.
*I finally completed my learning contract.
Tuesday, June 16, 2009
[Day 12]
I came to the work place early this morning, and tried to do the most of tasks I could in the morning such as setting up the office, etc. I got the task from colleague to separate the product(Kiwikitz) samples that they have received this morning. I separated, reported, and packed them. While I was doing this job, I asked to my colleague about this product. Because when I just started this practicum, she wanted me to research for this kind of products. She answered that she(Eastwind) wants to sell those products to Japanese people on the internet. I thought it was very good idea.
By the way, I already finished my 50hours of work. It's already past! I have to finish learning contract.
Monday, June 15, 2009
[Day 11]
I talked to previous intern student(Hayley) today about co-op and what happened last time with my supervisor and me. And she told me that it is important to do my tasks but I must keep this work place’s rule, otherwise it will be too much for them. So, after that I did a little sharing with her, and I was thinking of changing my personal aim to [Time management] in learning contract. Because I was thinking that I’m not kind of person that is good at managing time. I found myself lazy thesedays especially last weekend because even I had work to do by monday (today), I played all weekends, and ofcourse I had to sleep late on sunday because I couldn't finish it. I think it was a good opportunity for me to change my personal habit.

[Reflect Journal] 12/Jun/09
Things have CHANGED.
- [Learning Contract]
NZ Herald Translation >>
Eastwind RELATED Websites/Research Translation
[Day 10]
Task:
- Rearrange learning contract/timetable
- Start my aims again(as I changed some of my aims/strategies)
- translate practice
I determined to start my aims from today. It sounds bit late, but as I couldn't understand this working practicum quite well. but I guess I did now. So, now I have a work-based supervisor. So I don't know we will have a regular meeting every week, but I have a supervisor to check my works from, and explain my aims and what I need to do.
I tried to work on aim 3 today. which is translation. I already did some of translating works already at working place, but it wasn't on Eng-Jap nor Jap-Eng. I couldn't even get a marked after it. For the translation that time, the piece was for the company website and they needed a hand (and there were not enough Korean So i had to do it.) However, I was thinking to read some NZherald and translate them. Today was the first time for me to translate from Eng-Jap, so I did short piece. I printed out after I finished, and I'll check from Japanese to check for it. For my another aim, (aim4) I wrote on my learning contract that I will read a brochure and summarise once a week. So I will start from next week. I also want to do translation like this once a week. I'll do translation practices from what I've recieved from supervisor.
New words: (While translating)
- Assault ー襲撃
- claim ー 主将する
- interim ーしばらくの間、少しの間
- suppression ー活動禁止
Thursday, June 11, 2009
[Day 9]
I met my academic supervisor yesterday, and I changed a lot of parts from my learning contract. and I realized I was doing a lot of things wrong at my working places. I didn't even have a supervisor. I just wasted my last 10 days. How ever, I had to change little bit from now. I have to do things what I've written on the learning contract. Such as,
- research for the 'method of effective way of learning kanji'
- get Japanese magazine and read
- write down kanji I don't know
- summarize it.
- Arrange supervisor
I tried to research for the methods of effective way of learning kanji, but it wasn't easy to find out. and for the magazine, I found free magazine from outside of our office called 'GekkanNZ' I will start read from next week. I wrote on the learning contract that I will summarise on articles once a week. and I will upload on my portfolio as well as kanji I found hard.
Also, I will ask for my manager about the supervisor tomorrow. and I better start having a meeting with my work-based supervisor that I've missed last week. I guess I didn't miss a lot.
Monday, June 8, 2009
[Day 7]
[5/6/09] (09:30am~5:00pm)
Task.
- To research the websites about the rental appliances.
- To write the reports about them in Japanese. [unfinished]
New Words.
- 殺菌(さっきん)-sterilization
- 混乱(こんらん)-confusion
It was horrible day for me. It is first time I had full time so I was nervous in the morning. but soon I was asked to go to the post office by myself. I didn't have much fear about that. because I went few times with other colleagues last week. So, I went to the post office and checked the mail box. but I couldn't see any mail, but just a note. It was because we had too much mail so I had to go to the office and get the mails. I went to the office, showed the key number and recieved mails, and parcels etc.... and I came back. I was happy that I could complete this by myself.... No one knew that I had to go back to the postoffice to get KEY! I forgot about the key because of the humongous of mails, and the excitement.. so I had to run again today. LUCKILY, I could get our key and I had to appologize to everybody. I will not do the same mistakes again next time!!
Friday, June 5, 2009
[Day 6]
Task.
- To complete yesterday's work [TRANSLATION]
- To check one more time
- Look at the original file, and copy down all the kanji that I've found difficult.
What I will do.
- Borrow the Kanji book someone
- Write down forgotten words & the words that are usable in life
We learnt kanji with this blue book in KanjiⅡ in year 1. One of my aim was "To improve kanji skills" and to do that, I'm thinking of marking the ones I have forgotten from blue book. because I can feel that I forgot pretty much of basic kanji at this stage. To do that, I need to borrow the book first from my classmate.
Thursday, June 4, 2009
[Day 5]
Today I tried to handing in my second translation. I tried very hard on this translation. I met Dallas yesterday, and she said if Japanese does not check for this translation, it's not really necessary to work on translations. So as her advice, I already asked another Japanese colleague to check for my piece. but now I can't do anything about on this. because she finished on this translation without telling me anything. I can't believe how can she just finish this work without a word. She wanted me to do this work from the beginning, so I did it. If it was urgent work, she could send me a letter and say she will do it instead of me. I'm so depressed and angry.
However, yesterday I met Dallas and changed my 'Learning Contract'. I hope I can get along with it well at this place.
I met the head director for first time today. so I did greetings. I still can't read the atmosphere here.. I thought if someone came from University for a new intern, and there is a head master came, I would introduce to him.. I can't just join to this group,
I hope it will become better later..
Tuesday, June 2, 2009
[Day 4]
Task.
- New Translation (Jap-Korean)

It was the third day at Eastwind today, it was the national holiday yesterday, so I missed the first experience of 'FULL TIME'. By the way, today was short working day again, I went to the post office with my colleague as usual, I have to go to the post office by myself sometime, so I asked my colleague about the more specific informations about this. After that, I had some free times. While my free time, I worked on my eportfolio.
Today, I asked for another translation work. Last time, the work was from Japanese to Korean, but this time was different. I had look at the picture, and translate in to Japanese. (Kor>Jap).
Next time, I'll get an email from my colleague of my previous translation that has been checked by her. and put into my eportfolio. (also check which parts were wrong.)
I don't really like translation, but I want to have a try and see which parts were wrong, and learn more.
Friday, May 29, 2009
[Day 3]
Task.
- Post office (with a new colleague)
- Translation (Finishing from last time) - (email it to another colleague)
I did '3rd' day at 'Eastwind' today(29th May 09). I had pretty free time today compare to other previous 2 days for me. First, I had to go to the post office again with another new colleague. I think this is good chance for me to know each other because I can talk a lot of things while we go to the post office and come back, also I can ask him/her many things on the way. We did filings at the postoffice, and give posts to each colleagues which matches to their parts. I came back to my place after that, and worked on my translation work. (but maybe I finished too quick..) It wasn't easy because it was full of Kanji, but my dictionary helped :), maybe thats how I could finish the translation a little bit earlier than I expected. After that, I had to email the work to my colleague (who asked me to do it) .
I felt a little bit lonely today. Maybe I should try harder with other colleagues. (I worked on eportfolio today!!!) they looked busy.. so maybe I couldn't talk to them, but as some of my aims were 'TO BUILD REALATIONSHIPS WITH CO-OPERATORS' and 'TO LEARN HOW TO WORK WITH JAPANESE'. So I guess I should go and talk to them first!
月曜日はFullTimeだ!頑張りましょ!
Thursday, May 28, 2009
[Day 2]
Tasks.
- Turn the DVD on (at the main enterance)
- To continue the last researching products (the one I couldn't finish last time-soysauce)
- Go to the post office with my colleague
- (At the post office) Learn what to do at post office again. (more jobs than last time.)
- Translation (Eastwind Website - Japanese to Korean
Today was my second day. I was tired, but also excited. I was wondering because the manager wasn't there. I knew later that she went for a business trip. Everyday we go to the post office to get mails, and for any posting works. I think I will take pretty long to remember for this. They said I have to go by myself from next week... The filing mail was very interesting. but before filing, I should remember NAMES FIRST! By the way, It was such a beneficial working day today. because I did [TRANSLATION]! The kanji was still a problem for me, but it was very interesting. It was hard, but as Korean was my first language, so it wasn't not as hard as an English. There were some English words I didn't know before so I could learn more, and It became very good opportunity to revise Kanji. I didn't have much time today so I have to continue tomorrow. Maybe I should prepare tonight for tomorrow's work. :)
Tuesday, May 26, 2009
[Day 1]
Tasks.
- To learn how to set the office at the very beginning when they start.
- Go to the post office with a colleague to get their(EASTWIND) mails. (Everyday)
- Searching for the products -(Soy Sauce, NZ Products made from NZ native plants)
- To learn how to use copying machine, and do copy tasks.
Things I must to do.
- Remember all of my colleagues name. (Written names from a colleague for memorize)
- Trying to prepare honorific language, and use it.
Today I went to my work place for first time. I was very nervous at the beginning, so I prepared a small note as I have short memories. Today while I work, I tried to write all the work conditions, or when my manager asks me to do something, I tried to write on my little diary and recorded it. and I also prepared degital camera with me, and I took some photos to remember which might help me for the further work. They seems happy about my research skills and I think they are all good people. This is only first day of my work practicum so maybe I should try harder!
Co-Op
[EASTWIND]
I will start to write Reflective Journals on [Blogger]. I started the work at [EastWind] from today, and I still have a lot to do. but upgraded schedule, I can complete this practicum by end of winter holiday. This is my first working experience(not as part-time) so I'm very excited, expecially with Japanese. I want to learn and gain experiences from cultural, academical and also from social experiences.
